About Us

The Institute for Spiritual Life and Psychotherapy is a non-profit agency committed to the integration of spirituality and psychology through a broad spectrum of human growth and development activities. The services of the Institute are designed to optimize the emotional and spiritual health of persons across socio-economic, ethnic, and religious spectrums. Activities of the Institute include:

  • pastoral counseling and psychotherapy
  • training and education in pastoral counseling
  • clinical supervision
  • spiritual direction and consultation
  • research and writing in spiritual life and psychotherapy
  • retreats
  • preventive mental health workshops
  • recovery groups
  • meditation classes.

Pastoral Counseling Services of the South Shore (PCSSS)

Pastoral Counseling Services of the South Shore (PCSSS) provides high standard professional counseling for a variety of life concerns. We provide individual, couples, family, and group therapy for issues including:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • bereavement
  • relational problems
  • marriage and family
  • parenting
  • child and adolescent concerns
  • elderly concerns
  • eating disorders
  • trauma

PCSSS serves close to 300 clients across the South Shore with an interdisciplinary staff of eleven counselors, four post-graduate training fellows, three counseling interns, and two administrative assistants. PCSSS maintains offices through partner churches in Hanover (St. Andrew's Episcopal Church), Norwell (Church Hill United Methodist Church), Brockton (First Evangelical Church of Brockton), Hanson (First Baptist Church) and Plymouth (Christ Church Parish of Plymouth). We also provide in-home services to clients with disabilities and home-bound elderly.

PCSSS maintains Institutional Affiliation with theAmerican Association of Pastoral Counselors(AAPC). Clinical Director Reverend Laura Delaplain, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, holds Diplomate status with AAPC. Training Director Judith Mackenzie, M.Ed., is dually licensed as a Mental Health Counselor and as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Administrative Director, Anke Thorne, M.S., LMHC. Our counseling staffincludes licensed psychologists, licensed mental health counselors, licensed social workers, post-graduate fellows and interns.


PCSSS accepts most insurances. We offer a sliding fee scale for those without insurance coverage.
